Happy New Year!

As it’s the beginning of a new year, I thought I would let you all know what’s going on with current book/writing related stuff.

Recently I had a bit of a dilemma over my Into the Night series. I’m not going to stop writing it or anything, I just had to have a serious think about how many books there are going to be in the series. Originally I planned to have a trilogy, a second follow up trilogy, and two stand alone novels. But thinking more about the second trilogy, I realised that there probably wasn’t enough story for three books. I could have added more, but that would have been unnecessary filler, so I instead decided to have a single follow up novel.

But I soon started to see a problem with this. While the other two stand alone novels focus on and are from the point of view of characters other than Logan and Penny, the single follow up novel would be a continuation of the main story. It would be a separate story, but also a continuation. And here was my dilemma. Do I keep it as a separate follow up novel or add it to the trilogy to make a quartet?

The problem I saw with keeping it as a follow up novel was that it really was a continuation of the main story. It seemed a little rude to the readers to wrap up everything at the end of the trilogy and then introduce this separate book that has a self contained story, yet relies on the events of the trilogy to set the stage.

So, I considered adding it to the trilogy to make a quartet. But now I had the problem of it seeming like the events of the fourth book were just tacked on story. And by adding it an issue arose with some repetitiveness that may have worked fine in the original trilogy and second trilogy or even when changed to the trilogy and follow up novel, but didn’t work in the quartet.

I was really stuck on what to do, but after a bit of brainstorming with my housemate (who I have told way too many details about Into the Night to), I came up with a solution. Make Into the Night a quartet by weaving the events of book three and the follow up novel together and tweaking the story to make this work. This way the extra story isn’t tacked on and the story has a proper ending. This fixed the repetitiveness mentioned above and also cleared up something else that I was concerned with. I’m really happy with the outcome. Well, except for one thing, but that’s more do with the fact I made a change I didn’t want to make, but had to for the good of the story. I couldn’t fully go through with it, though, so I came up with a compromise that I’m not entirely happy with because it’s still not cool, but I can deal with. (I’m being totally cryptic, I know.)

To recap, Into the Night is now a quartet, which will be followed up by the two stand alone novels. And while I don’t want to say too much about the stand alone novels just yet, readers might be wondering about them. They will not be Into the Night from Zane’s perspective (or anyone else in the main group). Or a story about the estate before Logan’s arrival. All I will say for now is that the first stand alone novel will be kind of an origins story. Whose origin story? Well, there is actually a hint in From the Ashes as to whose it might be. And for the second stand alone novel, this mainly focuses on the story of a character who we’ve so far learned a little about and will continue to learn about over the next two books. But because their story isn’t essential to the main story (but I still think needs telling), it will be told in a stand alone novel. There will also be a secondary story in this novel, focusing on a character from the main group, but that’s all I’m saying. (Once again, cryptic.)

Oh, and by the way, Into the Night book three will be called…

Only Human

(Book four is currently untitled due to making things a quartet.)

Now, you might be wondering when Only Human will be released. Well, I have to write the thing first, so I’ll keep you posted. And why am I not writing it now? That’s because I’m currently working on something else.

The story that I’m working on at the moment is one that I had the idea for about three years ago. I really love the idea, but I’ve never been able to dedicate the time to it that I would like. And I think I’ve also been a bit freaked out about writing it. It’s YA scifi, and I’ve never written scifi before. And because I love the idea so much, I really want to do it justice. I’ve finally got some time to work on it and I really hope it turns out as awesome as I think it will. It better because otherwise I’m going to be utterly disappointed (I just keep having flashbacks to this poem I wrote when I was fourteen that I thought was going to be epic and then… fizzle).

Anywho, that’s all from me for now. I will keep you updated about Into the Night related stuff and any other writing bits and pieces (I might even share more about the scifi story - but if I never mention it again it means things have not gone to plan and it totally sucks).

I’m kind of glad 2015 is over. It blew chunks for many reasons (the least of which is that I creep ever closer to turning forty *shudder* - only seven more years - blergh!), but it had some good moments, like me finally releasing the second book in my Into the Night series, From the Ashes (if you haven’t read it, get on that).

2016 will be a great year. Well, I hope so.

From the Ashes is finally out!

So, in case you didn't get it from the title, From the Ashes is finally out. In ebook anyway. It's currently available on Amazon Kindle, with other devices to follow.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, From the Ashes is the long awaited sequel to Into the Night (the first book in a young adult paranormal fantasy series of the same name).

It has been a while between releases, so I thank everyone for being so patient and for their continuing support. I'm really happy with how the book turned, and I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.

You can get the book here:

From the Ashes - Excerpt

From the Ashes is coming soon, I promise. As a treat to everyone for being so patient, here is an excerpt from chapter 49. It’s non spoilery (as long as you’ve read Into the Night, but it might leave you thinking ‘what, what’s going on?’) and features a few of my favourite lines from the book.

Also, here’s a link to chapter 1 if you missed it: http://www.intothenightseries.com/excerptfromtheashes.htm

“You have plenty to offer,” said Logan’s grandmother.

Lori shook her head again. “I own a nursery. I grow plants.”

“Plants can be useful,” AJ interrupted from where she stood by Logan’s mother. “Gena used some in the spell bags she made and one of those basically incapacitated a werewolf.”

“And I’ll need to make more of them to use if things go bad,” Gena added. “I can’t rely on my magic if we’re up against the Other Witch. I was going to see if you had anything in your greenhouse I might be able to use.”

“I don’t know if I can help you with that,” Lori told her, disappointment shadowing her face. “I think the closest I have to spell ingredients are plants I use for a sleeping draught.”

Gena’s eyes lit up. “I’m sure I could make those work for something.”

“And I’ve got a whole storeroom at school full of chemicals at my disposal,” said Logan’s father. “Molotov cocktail, tear gas, you name it, I can make it.”

“Jesus Christ, Dad. What have you been teaching your students?”

His father put a hand on Logan’s shoulder. “Where do you think I learned it from?”

Logan laughed and as he did, he grasped that this was the most comfortable he had felt around his dad in a long time.

He looked towards his mother where she stood at the other end of the table.

“We’ll make the hood removable,” she was saying to Pepper, “that way it won’t be a hindrance when you’re fighting.”

As if sensing his eyes on her, Logan’s mother glanced up. She smiled, and the corners of Logan’s lips curled up in return, the expression coming naturally.

Are you okay? his mother mouthed silently across the table.

Logan nodded, his head hurting slightly more, but it didn’t matter. His parents were here for him. He had their support.

“We won’t be able to communicate with the group outside the fence,” Logan heard Gena say as she rejoined those in the living room, “so we need to think of some sort of signal if we’re in trouble.”

“Can’t you send up red sparks from your wand?” asked Paul.

“I don’t use a wand,” she told him irritably. “I’m not a wizard.” Gena paused for a second, her brows knitted together. “Add a flare gun to the list of supplies, Logan.”

From the Ashes - Chapter One

Eeek! Here it is. Well, the first chapter of From the Ashes, anyway.

It does contain spoilers for the first book, so if you haven't read Into the Night, I would suggest you not read this until you do.

From the Ashes is at least a few weeks away still, so thank you everyone for being so patient. And please try not to kill me after reading the first chapter.

Poem: Buried Alive

This is the first poem I have written in ages, so I thought I would share. It's a little bit morbid - my apologies - but it's not like my poetry was ever sunshine and rainbows. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although I may tweak it a bit further in spots.

Buried Alive

I wake to black
In a lack of light
I feel enclosed
In a space that's tight

My heart is racing
My heart is quick
My sweat starts trickling
Wet and slick

Breathe in
Breath out
Must get out

I pound my fists
And push and shove
I claw the lining
And wood above

My flesh is tearing
My flesh is cut
My tears are falling
Damp and hot

Breathe in
Breath out
Yell and shout

I scream for help
It goes unheard
I can't do more
It aches, it hurts

My hands are bleeding
My hands are raw
My blood is flowing
Thick and warm

Breathe in
Breathe out
Hope without

I can't escape
I'm trapped in here
I lie in wait
I'm filled with fear

My pulse is wavering
My pulse is weak
My breath starts slowing
Faint and bleak

Breathe in
Breath out
No way out

From the Ashes update: From the Ashes is still coming - I'm very slowly getting through the changes I need to make to it. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

2014 - The year that will be

Long time, no blog, so I thought I’d better post something. And when better to write a rambling post about absolutely nothing than the start of a new year.

Here goes then.

2013 wasn’t exactly a great writing year for me. I didn’t release From the Ashes like planned, so it has now been over a year and a half since Into the Night came out. THAT IS TERRIBLE. My apologies, people. It will be out soon - soon as in when I get around to finishing what I need to with it and then it will be out (didn’t I mention that this post was going to be rambly).

So what else can you expect from Jade in 2014? Not much because I am slow remember. Only joking (well, only a little because I really am rather slow). In 2014 I also plan to release my first horror book - this will either be a novel or a short story collection. I would like to bring out something else as well - Into the Night #3 or another novel, but we’ll see.

Oh, and I haven’t spoken about this on my blog yet, but for the past...whatever, I have been teaching myself how to draw manga. It’s my latest hobby, but I don’t get heaps of time to spend on it. And I’m not great because I sort of can’t draw, but like that’s a problem (*snort*). Maybe once I’m less bad (less bad?), I’ll post some stuff. I am VERY slowly working on a story, but the whole can’t draw thing is kind of getting in my way.

2014 has only just started and is shaping up to be a busy year already, in particular April. In the non-writing area of my life, I not only have my friend’s wedding - which is going to be absolutely amazing - but I’m also going to get to meet my all time favourite author Tamora Pierce, who is going to be a guest at Supanova Gold Coast. Unfortunately Supanova clashes with Oz Comic-Con Adelaide. That means I have to choose between them, right? Wrong. I’m going to both in the one weekend. Stupid Jade.

And so, one year ends and another begins, and still I have not released my second novel or found the key to immortality. Hopefully 2014 is a better year. :)

Edit: Tamora Pierce had to cancel for Supanova Gold Coast, so I didn't end up going, but I still went to Oz Comic-Con Adelaide and got Benedict Cumberbatch's autograph - after waiting in line for almost 3 hours, which was totally worth it!

From the Ashes release update

Okay, so From the Ashes definitely won’t be out next week (release was scheduled for November 5th). I’m hoping that it won’t be out too much later than planned, but I’m not sure of an exact time frame yet. I’m trying to finish off stuff while working around my day job, being sick on and off, and my general slowness. So I ask that you bear with me, guys. It will be worth the wait, I promise.

Mini Character Bio's for Into the Night

Have you forgotten what Logan's surname is? Or perhaps how old Gena is? Or maybe even AJ's hair colour (I'm looking at you, Deborah)? Never fear, there are now mini character bio's over on the Into the Night website.

For the moment it's just the main group of characters with bio's, but others will be added, and the bio's will be updated after the release of any new book.

Oh, and if you missed it, the release date for From the Ashes has been pushed back to November 5th.

In other news, I have now combined my two writing journals (I used to have a separate journal for my horror writing). So all writing/book related stuff will be posted here, while my other journal (link below) will be for posting non-writing related things.

Another Release Update

Bad news again, everyone. I'm pushing the release of From the Ashes back another month. It will now be released on November 5th.

Sorry! It will be worth the wait, I promise.

To make everyone feel better (and to calm any rage that this news may have ignited), here's a cute picture of Nessie sleeping.
